FAQ

garlic bulb farm

We have compiled the most common questions we hear about garlic. If you have a question that is not answered, please email us.

How do I store my garlic?

Bulbs will usually keep for 3-6 months when stored in a cool, dark place, while unpeeled cloves will keep for up to 10 days. You can peel garlic cloves and they should be stored in a plastic bag in the fridge and used in 5 - 7 days.

When do I plant my garlic?

It depends on the weather, but typically we plant our garlic around Thanksgiving.  It will vary from region to region.  You want the seed to at least establish some roots in the fall before the ground freezes.  You can also spring plant garlic, but from our experience it produces smaller bulbs.

Do I need to cover my garlic after planting?

This is most ideal thing to do after planting. It helps protect the bulbs from winter's freeze/thaw.  You can cover the grass with straw or grass clippings.  If you are unable to cover your rows (the Southern Alberta wind can be strong at times!) then I would recommend planting a little deeper to help protect the seeds.
